Why is Deepotsav celebrated in Ayodhya ?
Deepotsav is a grand celebration of light, devotion and the triumph of righteousness. It is inspired by the Hindu epic Ramayana and commemorates the return of Lord Shri Ram to Ayodhya after completing 14 years of exile.
According to the Ramayana tradition, Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya with Mata Sita and Lakshman after defeating Ravana, the king of Lanka. The people of Ayodhya welcomed their beloved prince by illuminating their homes and streets with earthen lamps.
This tradition is closely associated with the celebration of Diwali, symbolizing:
- The victory of good over evil.
- The triumph of light over darkness.
- The importance of truth, justice and righteousness.
- The return of Lord Ram to his kingdom.
- Unity, devotion and spiritual renewal.
Today, Ayodhya's Deepotsav recreates that symbolic welcome through a massive public festival.
Grand celebrations planned for Deepotsav 2026
1. Millions of diyas to illuminate the Saryu River
The most anticipated attraction is the lighting of millions of earthen lamps across the ghats of the Saryu River.
Recent preparations indicate a target of approximately 30 lakh illuminated diyas across 56 ghats, with around 33 lakh lamps being arranged to support the display.
Thousands of volunteers will carefully position, fill and light the diyas to create an extraordinary spectacle of devotion.
Prominent locations associated with the celebrations include Ram Ki Paidi, Lakshman Kila Ghat, Chaudhary Charan Singh Ghat and the Bhajan Sandhya area.
The organizers also aim to surpass Ayodhya's previous diya-lighting achievement.
2. Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir celebrations
The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir is a major spiritual focal point of the celebrations.
The temple gained renewed prominence after the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of Ram Lalla on January 22, 2024.
During the Deepotsav period, devotees traditionally visit the temple for darshan, prayers and religious observances. The temple's significance adds to the atmosphere of devotion throughout Ayodhya.
Specific temple ceremonies, decorations and darshan arrangements for November 7 should be confirmed through official temple announcements.
3. Grand Saryu Aarti involving 2,147 participants
Another major highlight planned for 2026 is a coordinated Aarti ceremony on the banks of the sacred Saryu River. The programme is expected to involve 2,147 participants, making it one of the central religious attractions of this year's event.
The ceremony will combine traditional worship, lamps, prayers and devotional music in a collective expression of faith.
4. Spectacular drone, laser and light shows
The 2026 celebration will combine traditional religious practices with modern visual technology.
A fleet of approximately 2,100 Indian-made drones is planned to create a Ramayana-themed aerial presentation. The programme will also include 3D projection, laser displays and environmentally conscious fireworks.
These presentations are intended to bring episodes from the Ramayana to life for spectators gathered along the riverfront.
5. Grand Ramayana procession and Ram Rajyabhishek
The festival is planned in three major phases.
First phase – Shobha Yatra: A ceremonial procession will begin from Saket Mahavidyalaya, presenting episodes from the Ramayana through tableaux, traditional music and cultural performances.
Second phase – Ram Katha Park: Artists portraying Lord Ram, Mata Sita and other Ramayana characters will participate in programmes depicting Bharat Milap and the coronation of Lord Ram, known as Ram Rajyabhishek.
Third phase – Saryu River celebrations: The final phase will feature the grand Saryu Aarti, diya lighting, drone displays, laser presentations and cultural performances at Ram Ki Paidi.
These arrangements were outlined during the Chief Minister's review of the festival preparations.
6. Cultural performances from India and abroad
Deepotsav is also expected to showcase India's cultural diversity.
Approximately 1,000 artists from several Indian states, including Odisha, Assam, Rajasthan, Kerala, Karnataka, West Bengal and Maharashtra, are expected to participate.
Cultural representatives from 12 countries are also expected to join the celebrations, including performances associated with the Ramayana tradition.
The event is intended to present Ayodhya not only as a pilgrimage centre but also as a destination for cultural exchange and international tourism.
Ayodhya Deepotsav and Guinness World Records
Ayodhya's annual Deepotsav has become internationally recognised for its enormous displays of illuminated earthen lamps.
In 2025, the festival achieved two reported Guinness World Records: one for lighting 26,17,215 diyas and another for a coordinated Aarti involving 2,128 participants.
The 2026 organisers are working to improve on the city's previous achievement. However, a new overall world record cannot be assumed merely from the 30-lakh target, because other large-scale lamp-lighting events have also been reported.
The final record position will depend on the independently verified count and Guinness World Records' applicable category and rules.
Security, cleanliness and public facilities
With large crowds expected, the Ayodhya administration is planning extensive arrangements for visitors.
Around 792 sanitation workers and 55 waste-management vehicles are expected to support cleaning operations. Authorities have also outlined plans for mobile toilets, drinking water facilities, decorative lighting, road safety and continuous cleaning at the main venues.
Special attention is being given to Ram Path, the river ghats, major intersections and routes used by pilgrims.
The administration is also encouraging reduced plastic use during the celebrations.
