Ganguly, 54, replaces Hemang Badani, who coached the side for the previous two seasons. Under Badani, Delhi Capitals finished fifth in IPL 2025 and sixth in IPL 2026, missing the playoffs on both occasions.
Long Association with the Franchise
Ganguly's connection with Delhi Capitals dates back to 2019, when he joined as an advisor. He later served as Director of Cricket for both the men's and women's teams. His coaching experience includes a stint as head coach of Pretoria Capitals, Delhi's sister franchise in South Africa's SA20 league, where he guided the side to the final in his debut coaching role.
This marks Ganguly's first appointment as an IPL head coach. He brings extensive experience as a player (113 Tests and 311 ODIs for India), former BCCI president, and administrator.
Statement from Ganguly and Ownership
In a statement released by the franchise, Ganguly Said. " I am looking forward to take on the role of Head Coach in the IPL. Delhi Capitals is a franchise very close to my heart, and one of that I have shared a strong relationship with over the years. I have worked closely with the owners, management, support staff and players, which makes this an exciting responsibility for me. We have a talented group and have played a good brand of cricket in the recent past. I am looking forward to working with the squad, the new season, and building a strong and fearless team."
Delhi Capitals Chairman and Co-owner Parth Jindal (JSW Sports) welcomed the move, noting that Ganguly has long been an integral part of the Capitals family. He expressed confidence that Ganguly's leadership and vision would help the team mount a stronger challenge for the IPL title.
Looking Ahead
The appointment comes as JSW takes over management of the franchise under the split-ownership agreement with GMR for the next cycle. Reports suggest Ganguly may work with a refreshed support staff; Yuvraj Singh has been linked as a possible batting coach, though no official confirmation has been made.
Delhi Capitals possess an experienced core that includes captain Axar Patel, senior batter KL Rahul, and the returning Rishabh Pant. Ganguly's task will be to convert the side's talent into consistent playoff contention and, ultimately, a first IPL title.
With his reputation for bold leadership and deep familiarity with the franchise, Ganguly's arrival signals a new chapter for Delhi Capitals as they prepare for the IPL 2027 season.
